Miami-Dade Jails Under Review

April 7th, 2008 · No Comments

The jails of Miami-Dade county are under review by federal investigators concerning their treatment of inmates.

The Department of Justice sent a detailed account of its upcoming review of the Miami-Dade County jails in a letter that was addressed to Mary Carlos Alvarez, U.S. Attorney R. Alex Acosta, and the head of the county’s corrections department.

The investigation will focus on efforts intended to protect inmates from harm. This includes providing adequate suicide prevention measures, medical care, mental healthcare, protection from inmate violence, and sanitation conditions. They will also look into the use of excessive force against inmates.

Mayor Alvarez replied to the letter with a memo outlining the plans to correct the problems at the county’s six main jail facilities.  These include a new mental health facility that will open soon. In addition, officers will now undergo crisis-intervention training.

The investigation is in response to a series of inmate deaths and police confrontations with the mentally ill. These reports led to a grand jury report that cited “the failure to provide effective, long-term treatment and care of the mentally ill who live among us.”
