New DNA evidence may clear a man who was previously convicted of rape. The man was also convicted of carjacking. A petition was filed by a group of lawyers who say that new DNA evidence indicates the current inmate did not commit the crimes.
The prisoner, Nathaniel Hatchett, has been in prison for the last 12 years due to a conviction for rape and carjacking. He was charged with stealing a woman’s car while she was in it and then raping her.
The new evidence shows that the DNA evidence in the case could not possibly have come from Mr. Hatchett. The lawyers, from the Thomas Cooley School of Law, hope that the judge will immediately release the man.
